What is M.A.T.?
Identifying Muscle Dysfunction
Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) is a hands-on neuromuscular therapy focused on identifying and correcting muscle inhibition, the root cause of muscle tightness and pain.
By addressing these underlying issues, MAT aims to improve the body’s overall function and performance, offering a more effective solution than simply treating symptoms.

The Key Principals of:
Muscle Activation Techniques
Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) is based on the idea that limitations in range of motion are often a sign of underlying muscular weakness. When certain muscles aren’t functioning properly, the body compensates—leading to tightness and restricted movement. MAT identifies these weak or inhibited muscles and works to restore their activation, helping reduce tension and improve overall muscle performance and control.

Step 1: Assessment
Starting your first MAT session? Expect to be actively involved in the process. You’ll have the chance to share your movement history, while we guide you through a series of assessments designed to evaluate range of motion and muscular function. These targeted tests help us identify areas of weakness or inhibition—so we can pinpoint and address the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Step 2: Treatment
Once weak or inhibited muscles are identified, we use targeted techniques—such as palpation and custom isometric contractions—to help reactivate them. As these muscles regain their ability to contract efficiently, improvements in range of motion often follow naturally.
Every MAT session is fully customized to your body and needs—no two treatments are the same, because no two bodies are the same.

A Powerful Client Testimonial
I have an autoimmune disease that affects both my muscles and skeletal system. For anyone in a similar boat, I would not hesitate to recommend this facility. They provide a wide variety of equipment for all levels and approaches including MAT. I personally had to start at square one. With The Exercise Lab’s help and their crazy ability to customize exercises, they were able to put me back together again. Due to extensive hip damage I was unable to walk and now I can. I also can exercise on my own again without injuring myself because they have strategically designed exercises that are customized towards me. This is important to me because I had many past experiences with trainers and physios giving me the same standard approach which does NOT work especially for individuals dealing with autoimmunity. The staff is very understanding and non-judgmental. I feel very comfortable going to their facility. Highly recommended!

How Can Muscle Activation Technique (MAT) Help You?
Muscle Activation Technique (MAT) isn’t just for professional athletes—it’s for anyone looking to move better, feel stronger, and address the root causes of pain or dysfunction. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, dealing with chronic tightness, or noticing imbalances in your movement, MAT offers a targeted and individualized approach.
Built Around Your Body
Unlike passive treatments or generalized mobility work, MAT uses your own movement and neuromuscular responses as the guide. Through precise testing and muscle-specific isometric activation, we work with your body’s current capabilities to improve stability, control, and contractile strength—without pushing beyond your limits.
Addressing Root Causes, Not Just Symptoms
Movement issues often stem from muscles that aren’t doing their job. MAT helps identify and activate these inhibited muscles, improving coordination throughout the body. For example, low back pain might actually stem from weakness at the ankle or hip. By finding and correcting the source, not just the symptom, MAT creates lasting improvements in how your body moves and feels.
Rehab, Recovery, and Long-Term Resilience
If you’re dealing with an injury, chronic pain, or a history of compensation patterns, MAT can play a key role in your recovery. By reactivating the right muscles and restoring balance to your movement system, we help reduce pain, prevent re-injury, and build a stronger foundation for long-term performance.
At The Exercise Lab, our certified MAT specialists are trained to assess your movement at a deeper level—so you can restore function, reduce discomfort, and move with confidence again.
